biography

Elizabeth Hale's journey as an artist is a rich tapestry woven with deep family connections and dynamic cultural influences stretching across generations. Growing up surrounded by creativity, her family's involvement with the Taos and Santa Fe art colonies of the early 20th century and the vibrant New York art scene of the 1940s created an environment where art was both vocation and silent dialogue.

Hale's path toward becoming an artist seemed almost predestined, marked not by singular revelations but by a steadfast, lifelong passion for creation. This innate drive led her to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting at the University of New Mexico, where she honed her craft and began developing her distinct artistic voice.

Her career is characterized by notable transitions and continual reinvention. In the 1970s and 80s, she emerged as a prominent exhibiting artist in New Mexico. A move to Los Angeles, however, shifted her focus to graphic design. She began her graphic design journey with the influential punk label Slash Records and ultimately served as an art director at the Los Angeles Times Magazine. After leaving the Times, she discovered a new passion for surface and pattern design, leading her to study and teach at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM) in Textile and Digital Design. This exploration allowed her to merge her love of fine arts with the structured rigor of textile patterns, resulting in her becoming a featured surface designer for The Hollywood Bowl and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, crafting designs for various merchandise. Retiring in 2020 marked a return to painting as she settled in the tranquil setting of Los Osos, California.

Her relocation to California's central coast inspired a deeper exploration of the local topography and its vibrant, ever-changing colors. Her paintings capture the fleeting textures, patterns, and seasonal hues of the region's landscapes. Working with acrylics and various other materials on wood panels, her process remains richly organic and improvisational. Her compositions, grounded in landscape concepts, juxtapose movement and shape through the tactile play of overpainting, layering, and distressing.

Hale's work reflects an inner dialogue that treasures the transient beauty of nature and the transformative potential of art. Her pieces resonate within the community, underscoring her belief in the pivotal role of art in society. Now, as an artist with a wealth of experience, her focus lies in exhibiting her work and engaging with the art community, driven by a passion for sharing the unique narratives embedded in her creations.
